Granite Transformation looked ready to collapse following its 95-86 win against Capital City Orthopaedics in the semifinal game just 15 minutes before the championship. Five and a half minutes into the game, MOHA already had a 27-6 lead it seemed unlikely to relinquish; by halftime MOHA lead 71-41.

Perhaps the break gave Granite all the rest it needed, or perhaps the first half drained MOHA of whatever energy it had. But Granite went on a 22-10 run in the second half, and had the game within four points with less than two minutes to play.

MOHA still took home the championship, but the second half proved worthwhile for the fans who stuck around.

Creighton’s Ryan Sears was named the regular season MVP, while Iowa State freshman Bubu Palo was tabbed as Playoff MVP.

Granite Tranformation beat Capital City Orthopaedics 95-86 for a spot in the Cap City League championship game.

One thing I have to say about Granite Transformation is that it is two different teams based on whether Josh Young is playing. The Drake guard missed a couple games around the Fourth of July, and Granite really struggled without him. Tonight, though, Young really showed a lot of poise and skill in a league that tends to lack much effort at displaying either of those things.

OK, stats:

Granite: Young 29 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists. Justin Hamilton (ISU) 21 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists. Gabe Knutson (Lehigh) 9 points, 6 rebounds. Charles Boozer (ISU) 21 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists. Tyler Egli (UNC-Pembroke) 10 points, 6 rebounds.

CCO: Jimmie Binnie (Dayton) 23 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists. Ryan Sears (Creighton) 24 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists, 1 steal. Scott Windom (DMACC) 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals. Alex White (Drake) 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal. LA Pomlee (ISU) 6 points, 6 rebounds.

As if that’s the only difference between the biggest event in college sports and what happens in West Des Moines every summer.

Friday’s quarterfinals, to be honest, were a little surprising. Having watched the league all summer, I expected Peak Performance to stand up to Capital City Orthopaedics, but the opposite happened. CCO took a serious lead in the first half and never looked back.

Part of that was because the CCO players simply never missed. Both teams took 84 shots, but Peak made 31 and CCO sunk 47. Any team will have a good shot at winning on a night it makes 56 percent of its shots.

As for individual players, ISU freshman Antwon Oliver was the only one who really stood out to me. Oliver finished with 17 points, tied for the most of any Peak Performance player. He drove to the basket a few times and was taking smarter shots than most of his teammates.

Kris Miller from William Penn definitely had a nice night of his own, scoring 44 points in large part because he made 8-of-12 from 3-point range.

The second game featured the most defense I’ve ever seen in two years of watching Capital City League basketball. Ames/Iowa State point guard Bubu Palo had another good game, with several steals (he was only credited for one, but contributed to more), along with a nice inside-outside game. Early in the matchup between the YMCA and MOHA teams Palo blocked a shot by Marquis Gilstrap, and I really hope he reminds Marquis of that one for a while.

Jamie Vanderbeken played a little bit of defense down low, including a block or two, and showed off a nice hook shot.

The highlight of the game, however, came with 35 seconds to play. MOHA had an 84-83 lead and the ball, when the shot clock should have expired. While the league rules state that there is a shot clock in the final two minutes, there was no physical shot clock in place, so the refs had no idea the ball should have been turned over. A YMCA player fouled Palo, and Palo went to the line to shoot—and make—two free throws, stretching MOHA’s lead to three points. Both Dominique Buckley and Gilstrap attempted 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds, but neither fell and the YMCA team was eliminated on what was likely a technicality.

Friday’s stats:

I spent most of Wednesday night’s games catching up on some interviews for the next couple weeks, so not much in terms of notes on how the night went. Here are a few things worth mention, though, then the statistical highlights:

-Iowa State’s Bubu Palo, who turns 18 today (July 9), had a terrific game, scoring 25 points on 7-of-19 shooting in MOHA’s 91-82 win against the YMCA team. He did a little bit of a Dominique Buckley move, making his mark on the game very quietly. It wasn’t until late in the game that I even noticed he’d been having so much success.

-MOHA and Palo won without ISU starting point guard Diante Garrett, who attended all three games and sat on the bench with his teammates for a while, despite breaking a bone in his foot. More on that can be found here: http://www.gocyclones.com/news.php?ID=1683

-Also absent were Jamie Vanderbeken and L.A. Pomlee, who I’m told didn’t make it back from working ISU travel camp in time to compete. Both should be at the remaining two games.

-Former UNI player Matt Schneiderman did not attend. Neither did Drake point guard Josh Young.

-Friday’s playoff games will feature Peak Performance vs. Capital City Orthopaedics at 6:45 p.m. and YMCA vs. MOHA at 8 p.m. There will be no 5:30 game. Site is the Valley High gym.

Sean Jones (Drake) 6 points, 10 rebounds. Palo 25 points, 7-of-19 field goals, 5 rebounds, 5 assists.

A few notes before posting the game-by-game breakdowns from Sunday.

First, all games for the remainder of the season will be held at the Valley High Gym, NOT at Valley Southwoods. Games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 this Wednesday, with the first round of playoffs at 6:45 Friday, and the semifinals and championship on Sunday, beginning at 5:30.

Second, July marks the return of the major AAU circuit action, so I’m told most of the elite high school players are done playing in the league. So if you’re hoping to see Harrison Barnes, try an Ames High game next fall.

OK, here we go.

Capital City Orthopaedics 120, Peak Performance 100

Looking at statistics, I’m kind of surprised CCO didn’t win by a wider margin. They had six players in double-digit scoring, while Peak hand just three.

L.A. Pomlee (ISU) did a nice job working the post on Sunday. He had several good second-chance buckets, posted up for a few good looks and even had at least one driving dunk. He looks more confident than he did last year in Cap City, or even during ISU practices. His game seems to be maturing. He led CCO with 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting and nine rebounds.

It seemed like Alex Dorr (ISU) was on the court the whole game, and his stats match that. Dorr had 25 points on 11-of-21 shooting and 12 rebounds. The Iowa State walk-on hasn’t really done anything to get lots of attention this summer, but has been very consistent. Sunday was a good example of that.

Antwon Oliver (ISU) didn’t play until the second half, and then only very sparingly. He seems to still be nursing the sore ankle that kept him out of the first game last month. He and Chris Colvin (ISU) has had some pretty impressive games for Peak, but didn’t look to be 100 percent on Sunday.

From what I hear the DMACC basketball team should be pretty strong this season, and Tyler Stumme showed why. Several of the DMACC players have been doing well this summer, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Iowa’s Div. I coaches looking at Stumme down the road.

Statistical highlights:

Peak: Colvin 6 points, 4-of-6 free throws, 3 rebounds, 2 assists. Oliver 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block. Reece Uhlemhopp (Drake) 19 points, 7-15 field goals, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Dorr 25 points, 11-of-21 field goals, 12 rebounds. Stumme 35 points, 10-of-15 field goals, 9-of-14 threes, 6-of-6 free throws, 3 rebounds, 2 assists.

CCO: Jimmie Binnie (Dayton) 19 points, 8-of-14 field goals, 5 rebounds, 4 assists. Ryan Sears (Creighton) 8 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 7 steals. Scott Windom (DMACC) 11 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal. Kris Miller (Wm. Penn) 17 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals. David Smith (Drake) 18 points, 8-of-12 field goals, 9 rebounds, 7 assists. Josh Henry (Iowa Central) 18 points, 7-of-13 field goals, 4 rebounds, 3 assists. Pomlee 24 points, 11-of-16 field goals, 9 rebounds.

Granite Transformations 101, MOHA 100

Josh Young (Drake) returned this week and demonstrated exactly why Bulldog fans love him so much. Young has this quiet ability to seemingly be everywhere on the floor, score about a million points, and do it all without anyone noticing he was having such a great game. He finished with 33 on Sunday to lead Granite in its win.

Diante Garrett (ISU) is on the same team as Bubu Palo (ISU), and has been doing a nice job tutoring the incoming freshman point guard. Throughout the summer he’s been shouting instructions and encouragement to Palo on the court, and I noticed yesterday that when the two are on the court together he’ll often toss the ball to Palo to bring it up the court.

In Craig Brackins’ absence, Garrett is doing a nice job stepping into a leadership role. He is known for his comic relief, but I’ve been impressed by how supportive he is of the other players, he just puts his own goofy spin on it. Oh, and he scored 32 points Sunday, which isn’t so bad, either.

Statistical highlights:

Granite: Young 33 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 block. Charles Boozer (ISU) 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists. Leonard Houston (ex-Drake) 9 points, 7 rebounds. Matt Schneiderman (ex-UNI) 6 points, 6 rebounds. Tyler Egli (UNC-Pembroke) 13 points. Gabe Knutson (Lehigh) 14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block.

MOHA: Garrett 32 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals. Jamie Vanderbeken (ISU) 16 points, 13 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 blocks. Nick Grant (14 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist. DeAnthony Zanders (SW Minn. State) 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assist. Bill Freeman (Ellsworth CC) 12 points, 3 rebounds. Palo 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block.

Scott Christopherson (ISU) showed off his 3-point shot in the first half, finishing with 3-of-5 shooting from long range but also sinking a number of nice shots from near the arc.

In case anyone didn’t know, former Drake start Andre Calvin is pretty darn good. He was working a nice inside-outside presence, getting a few good jumpers and some nice looks under the basket.

Dominique Buckley (ISU) has been showing steady progress all summer, and had another solid game on Sunday. In a year where none of the ISU players are really jumping out the way Garrett and Boozer did last summer, Buckley has at least been steady. He and Marquis Gilstrap might be showing the most promise among ISU players, in different ways and for different reasons.

Speaking of Gilstrap, it was interesting to see the dip LaRon Dendy (ISU) took without Gilstrap, who missed Sunday’s games. Dendy had been scoring 20 points every night without a problem, but much of it was noticeably off passes from and during plays orchestrated by Gilstrap, who is also on the YMCA team. The two really fed off each other. On Sunday, though, Dendy seemed way off his game, though his stats didn’t necessarily show it. It might just be an indication that he does better in more organized games than the pick-up-esque stuff we see at Cap City.

Statistical Highlights:

Coke: Ashton Sauls (UNC-Central) 15 poitns, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals. Adam Emmenecker (ex-Drake) 2 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, 1 bock. Christopherson 13 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists. Calvin 26 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block. Daremey Steptoe (DMACC) 5 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists.

YMCA: Dendy 15 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists. Kevin Smith (Grandview) 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals. Buckley 16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals. Chad Boston (SWCC) 8 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist.

Here are some scoring highlights:

YMCA 110, Peak Performance 101

YMCA: Marquis Gilstrap (ISU) 38 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists. LaRon Dendy (ISU) 26 point, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block. Andrew Dau (Simpson) 13 points. Dominique Buckley (ISU) 13 points, 8 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 steals.

Peak: Chris Colvin (ISU) 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists. Alex Dorr (ISU) 12 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists. Harrison Barnes (Ames) 42 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block.

Notes: Barnes made his second and final appearance this season, having just returned from the Paul Pierce Skills Academy but not yet left for the LaBron James Skills Academy. He had a great night, missed three shots in a row in the first half but was nearly flawless through the rest of the game.

Gilstrap and Dendy continue to feed off each other in a very impressive manner. It took both of them to push YMCA past Peak, but they seem to have a great sense of each other’s games. They’re very similar players; Gilstrap is a little quicker but Dendy seems to have a very high basketball IQ.

Buckley surprised nearly everyone with a near triple-double. He didn’t score as many points as some of the other elite players in the game, but showed that he’s really developed as a court general.

Coca-Cola: Ashton Sauls (UNC-Central) 27 points, 3 assists, 2 steals. Scott Christopherson (ISU) 13 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist. Andre Calvin (ex-Drake) 27 points, 7 rebounds. Jordan Clarke (Drake) 23 points, 9 rebounds. Adam Emmenecker (ex-Drake) 4 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals.

MOHA: Jamie Vanderbeken (ISU) 28 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals. Nick Grant (Drake) 18 points, 9 rebounds. Bill Freeman (Ellsworth CC) 17 points. Bubu Palo (ISU) 22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals.

Notes: Emmenecker apparently made it a goal not to shoot the ball (I kid you not), but proved that it’s really an unnecessary part of an overall great game. He’s missed the past few sessions, but Coke could win it all if he sticks around through the rest of the season.

Vanderbeken was 6-of-11 from 3-point range, and his 11 rebounds proved that the Cyclone big man (he’s 6-foot-11, coincidentally) is learning to balance his great outside shot with the inside game demanded of post players. I’ll have an interview with him about that very topic on the site tomorrow.

Granite: Justin Hamilton (ISU) 12 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists. Ben Simons (Drake) 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists. Doug McDermott (Ames) 18 points, 4 rebounds. Charles Boozer (ISU) 31 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists.

CCO: Scott Windom (DMACC) 24 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals.

Notes: Justin Hamilton had a solid night, as usual, with a double-double. But it was Charles Boozer who really pulled through for Granite in its last-minute win. I don’t remember if Boozer had a shot blocked or a turnover or what exactly, but something didn’t go his way about midway through the second half, and from there he exploded. Actually, the emotional response was typical Boozer, and definitely fun to watch.

I was talking to ISU coach Greg McDermott, who was there watching son Doug, and Mac mentioned early in the first half how Matt Schneiderman was such a solid rebounder during his days at UNI. He showed that again on Wednesday. Schneiderman is currently playing basketball overseas.

And Granite point guard Josh Young, from Drake, missed both Sunday and Wednesday’s games, but should be back this weekend.

Peak Performance was looking for its first win of the season, and got it in a decisive victory against the previously 1-2 YMCA team.

Part of Peak’s advantage came from the arrival of Ames High senior Harrison Barnes, who had missed the first few sessions while participating in the National Basketball Players’ Association Top 100 Camp. Barnes had a number of impressive plays on the evening, including back-to-back one-handed layups to give Peak a 32-22 lead with 8:27 to play in the first half. He missed a pull-up jumper a few possessions later, but Iowa State’s Alex Dorr got the rebound and a put-back basket. Barnes also had a second-chance dunk in the first half, but the YMCA team used solid free throw shooting to keep it close and Peak led by just three points at the half.

A few minutes into the second half, ISU’s Marquis Gilstrap (YMCA) was called for goaltending on a layup by ISU’s Chris Colvin (Peak), which helped Peak stretch its lead to 66-59. Colvin drew a foul on Peak’s next possession, splitting his free throws. But Gilstrap made an ally-oop dunk at the 14 minute mark, making the lead 67-64 Peak.

Barnes picked up a loose ball for a layup on Peak’s next possession, then made a 1-handed dunk with 11:30 to play to make it 74-68. YMCA never got within seven points in the game’s final 10 minutes.

Statistical highlights:

Peak: Colvin 11 points, 4 assists. Antwon Oliver 17 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists. Brent Heemskerk 11 points, 12 rebounds. Barnes 40 points, 8 rebounds.

YMCA: Gilstrap 41 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals. Dendy 13 points, 10 rebounds. Buckley 22 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals. Kevin Smith (Grandview) 6 rebounds.

Granite Transformation 90, Capital City Orthopaedics 83

Drake’s Josh Young put Granite on the board first, opening the game with a layup, then spent the rest of the game proving yet again why he tends to be one of the first players picked in the draft each year. With Ames High’s Doug McDermott and ISU’s Charles Boozer missing from the Granite lineup, Young stepped up to help Granite stay in control throughout the first half, and hold on to its lead when things got close in the second.

ISU’s Justin Hamilton (Granite) had a nice dunk with less than three minutes remaining in the first half, and Granite went into the half up 50-44.

C.C.O. took the lead briefly in the second half, and was up 60-58 when Young was flattened on a pull-up jumper at the freethrow lane. The shot went in, and Young made the follow-up free throw, giving Granite the lead back with 13:12 remaining. Ortho scored on its next possession, but Young drew another foul when he ran into ISU’s L.A. Pomlee (C.C.O.) and made both free throws to take back the lead.

Granite led 80-69 when Drake’s Ryan Wedel (C.C.O.) made a 3-point play. Young had a steal and a reverse layup to push it back to 84-76 Granite with 4:20 on the clock.

It was a two-point game with less than two minutes to play, but C.C.O. struggled with repeated missed shots on repeated possessions, and Young sunk a 3-pointer to give Granite the definitive lead.

Coca Cola 115, MOHA 96

The final game of the night, to be honest, wasn’t much of a game. Coca-Cola had a decided advantage from the start, and was up by at least 20 points throughout much of the second half.

Not that the MOHA players took that lightly. ISU’s Jamie Vanderbeken worked on his 3-point shooting, and had a decent time of it. ISU’s Diante Garrett tried to find every open shot on the court, but couldn’t quite give his team the lift it needed. And SW Minn State’s DeAnthony Zanders did his best to produce on the court, despite quickly picking up four fouls and needing to play cautiously as a result.

MOHA also struggled in part because of a lack of subs. With only six players, the fatigue looked like a factor. Drake’s Nick Grant, Cal State-Fullerton’s Ray Miller, Drake’s Aaron Hawley, SWCC’s Trent Fischer, Hoover’s Quincy King and Drake’s Sean Duff were all absent.

Hey, it’s summer league. It happens.

The win helped Coca-Cola improve to 3-1. It’s now tied with C.C.O. for second place behind undefeated Granite Transformations.

Wednesday night’s installment of Cap City action turned out the best games, if not the most comfortable conditions. The air conditioning didn’t appear to be turned on at the Valley High gym, but that didn’t deter quite a crowd from heading to West Des Moines for the games.

Fortunately for those fans, each game was well contested. Here’s a wrap up:

Coca-Cola 112, Peak Performance 109

With the score at 51-46 at the half, the first installment of Monday’s competition was set to be a close one. The joy of the Cap City League for players seems to be that they can experiment with styles, plays and ideas that their coaches would never let them try during the regular season. In this case, both teams began fouling with about seven minutes left in the second half–well before the typical coach will take that step.

With about 5:12 left to play, Iowa State freshman guard Chris Colvin (Peak) drew a foul on a nice looking layup down the middle of the lane. Some free throws would have ended the deal, but Colvin and his defender got into a tiff after play stopped, and Colvin was ejected from the game.

ISU freshman Antwon Oliver (Peak) blocked a layup by sophomore Scott Christopherson (Coke), which Christopherson didn’t like much.

Perhaps the best performance of the game came from UNC-Central guard Ashton Sauls (Coke). DMACC’s Tavaryns Gray attempted a reverse layup but missed, and Sauls appeared out of nowhere with a put-back dunk to make it 95-89 Coke. Christopherson found him for a jumper soon after, but Oliver hit a three to stay in the game.

Coke lead 109-104 when ICCC’s Jacob Petersen (Peak) hit a 3-point shot with .7 seconds remaining, and a foul simultaneously called against one of the Coke players. DMACC’s Tyler Stumme sunk both free throws, and the game was tied with .7 seconds to play.

With overtime seemingly certain, Sauls chucked a shot from beyond half court as the buzzer sounded. It went in, and Coke won 112-109.

Statistical highlights:

Coke: Sauls 32 points, 6 rebounds. Christopherson 23 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists. Jordan Clarke (Drake) 23 points, 14 rebounds. Gray 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists.

Peak: Colvin 15 points, 8 assists. Antwon Oliver 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists. Heemskerk 23 points, 15 rebounds. Alex Dorr (ISU) 15 points, 4 rebounds. Stumme 13 points.

Capital City Orthopaedics 118, Medical Oncology & Hematology 111

The MOHA-Ortho game was again typical of most basketball games: the real action only happened in the second half. We start, therefore, with ISU’s Jamie Vanderbeken (MOHA) hitting a nice 3-pointer with 8:45 to play, closing Ortho’s lead to 90-84. Unfortunately for JVB, it took MOHA about 45 seconds to build its lead back to 11 points.

ISU’s Diante Garrett (MOHA) drew a foul with 3:32 to go, and split his free throws to make the score 106-103.

Sadly for DG, ISU teammate L.A. Pomlee closed the game on a roll. Pomlee (Ortho) posted up on the next possession, though, followed it up with a turnaround jumper and recorded the assist on a 3-pointer by Drake’s Ryan Wedel to give Ortho a 113-105 advantage. Then he kicked it out to William Penn’s Kris Miller for a 3-pointer at the one minute mark. ISU freshman Bubu Palo tried for a steal but couldn’t get his hand on the ball, then fouled to stop the clock with 23.5 seconds left and a 5-point margin. Wedel made both free throws to seal the win.

Statistical highlights:

Ortho: Miller 37 points, 5 rebounds. Pomlee 23 points, 9 rebounds. Scott Windom (DMACC) 23 points, 7 rebounds.

Granite Transformations 87, YMCA 86

ISU’s Dominique Buckley (YMCA) got things started with a steal and a layup early in the first half. ISU’s Marquis Gilstrap (YMCA)missed a pair of consecutive jumpers–no doubt because of the great defense of Charles Boozer (Granite)–but quickly got things turned around it what proved to be a great outing for the rookie/senior. Gilstrap found ISU’s LaRon Dendy for an ally-oop with 15 minutes left in the first half, starting a string of good plays by the pair.

Ames High’s Doug McDermott (Granite) finally got the call after multiple put-back attempts with about 7:45 to play, and sunk both free throws to cut YMCA’s lead to seven points. Dendy tried to find Gilstrap for a layup at the buzzer, but it was no good and the score stayed at 45-45 going into halftime.

Dendy had a layup to start the second half, but missed a 3-point shot on the next possession. He got a tip in on a missed layup by Dominique Buckley the next time down the court, and Gilstrap followed it with a layup of his own.

Later in the second half Dendy was trapped down low, looking for a heavily guarded Buckley to bail him out. Not seeing Buckley or any other option, he turned and hit a jump shot under pressure. Drake’s Ben Simmons found college teammate Josh Young (Granite) for a layup to tie the game at 59-59 with about 13 minutes to play.

Shortly after that Dendy posted up on McDermott, then decided to design a play on the fly. The play didn’t really work out, but YMCA scored on the reset. Dendy had a put-back to take a 78-77 lead with six minutes to go.

ISU’s Justin Hamilton (Granite) dunked inside the final minute to take a 87-86 lead, and despite Gilstrap’s attempt at a jumper just before the horn, that remained the final score.

Statistical highlights:

Granite: Young 22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists. Matt Schneiderman (former UNI) 15 points, 10 rebounds. McDermott 6 points, 8 rebounds.

YMCA: Gilstrap 31 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists. Dendy 27 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists. Buckley 10 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists. Smith 7 rebounds. Andrew Dau (Simpson) 8 rebounds.
