Wednesday night update

Between Harrison Barnes’ appearance at the Capital City League on Wednesday and Jamie Vanderbeken’s news that he will tryout with the British national team, I haven’t had a chance for much detail regarding Wednesday’s games.

Here are some scoring highlights:

YMCA 110, Peak Performance 101

YMCA: Marquis Gilstrap (ISU) 38 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists. LaRon Dendy (ISU) 26 point, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block. Andrew Dau (Simpson) 13 points. Dominique Buckley (ISU) 13 points, 8 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 steals.

Peak: Chris Colvin (ISU) 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists. Alex Dorr (ISU) 12 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists. Harrison Barnes (Ames) 42 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block.

Notes: Barnes made his second and final appearance this season, having just returned from the Paul Pierce Skills Academy but not yet left for the LaBron James Skills Academy. He had a great night, missed three shots in a row in the first half but was nearly flawless through the rest of the game.

Gilstrap and Dendy continue to feed off each other in a very impressive manner. It took both of them to push YMCA past Peak, but they seem to have a great sense of each other’s games. They’re very similar players; Gilstrap is a little quicker but Dendy seems to have a very high basketball IQ.

Buckley surprised nearly everyone with a near triple-double. He didn’t score as many points as some of the other elite players in the game, but showed that he’s really developed as a court general.

Coca-Cola 125, MOHA 97

Coca-Cola: Ashton Sauls (UNC-Central) 27 points, 3 assists, 2 steals. Scott Christopherson (ISU) 13 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist. Andre Calvin (ex-Drake) 27 points, 7 rebounds. Jordan Clarke (Drake) 23 points, 9 rebounds. Adam Emmenecker (ex-Drake) 4 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals.

MOHA: Jamie Vanderbeken (ISU) 28 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals. Nick Grant (Drake) 18 points, 9 rebounds. Bill Freeman (Ellsworth CC) 17 points. Bubu Palo (ISU) 22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals.

Notes: Emmenecker apparently made it a goal not to shoot the ball (I kid you not), but proved that it’s really an unnecessary part of an overall great game. He’s missed the past few sessions, but Coke could win it all if he sticks around through the rest of the season.

Vanderbeken was 6-of-11 from 3-point range, and his 11 rebounds proved that the Cyclone big man (he’s 6-foot-11, coincidentally) is learning to balance his great outside shot with the inside game demanded of post players. I’ll have an interview with him about that very topic on the site tomorrow.

Granite Transformations 125, Capital City Orthopaedics 118

Granite: Justin Hamilton (ISU) 12 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists. Ben Simons (Drake) 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists. Doug McDermott (Ames) 18 points, 4 rebounds. Charles Boozer (ISU) 31 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists. Matt Schneiderman (ex-UNI) 28 points, 15 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals.

CCO: Scott Windom (DMACC) 24 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals. Kris Miller (William Penn) 26 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists. David Smith (Drake) 36 points, 7 rebounds, 10 assists. John Wolfe (Ellsworth) 7 points, 5 rebounds.

Notes: Justin Hamilton had a solid night, as usual, with a double-double. But it was Charles Boozer who really pulled through for Granite in its last-minute win. I don’t remember if Boozer had a shot blocked or a turnover or what exactly, but something didn’t go his way about midway through the second half, and from there he exploded. Actually, the emotional response was typical Boozer, and definitely fun to watch.

I was talking to ISU coach Greg McDermott, who was there watching son Doug, and Mac mentioned early in the first half how Matt Schneiderman was such a solid rebounder during his days at UNI. He showed that again on Wednesday. Schneiderman is currently playing basketball overseas.

And Granite point guard Josh Young, from Drake, missed both Sunday and Wednesday’s games, but should be back this weekend.
